  • Discover Newport is gathering local views on tourism through its Resident Sentiment Survey from residents in Newport, Jamestown, Middletown and nearby towns to help shape future economic plans. The survey also offers a chance to win a $100 gift card at a local restaurant.  What's Up Newp

CULTURE NEWS

  • Marble House will install a $1.5 million geothermal climate system to protect its historic artifacts while reducing fuel oil use by up to 80 percent. Contractors have drilled 21 wells behind the mansion — and the project is expected to finish in late spring.  What's Up Newp

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Developers are asking a court to review a freeze order that may delay the nearly finished Revolution Wind project designed to power local communities. Hearings for Equinor, Dominion Energy, and Orsted are set later this week (delays risk costing millions per day).  What's Up Newp

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Newport and Middletown leaders met Monday at 5:30 p.m. to discuss merging their school districts with plans for a joint committee and expanded curriculum. The proposal follows a 2022 vote where Newport voters rejected the merger and included a Q&A with RIDE to outline the timeline.  WJAR NBC 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Jan. 19, all federal, state, and municipal offices (including post offices, public libraries, and the RMV) will be closed, and mail delivery will be halted while bank ATMs and online banking remain available and grocery stores stay open.  The Newport Daily News

HEALTH NEWS

  • South County Health is accepting new OB-GYN patients at its Newport location as the Center for Women's Health offers comprehensive care for every life stage.
