  • Rose Island Lighthouse & Fort Hamilton Trust has launched its first-ever permanent endowment fund in partnership with Rhode Island Foundation — seeded by a $250,000 gift timed with national celebrations — to support preservation and education on Newport Harbor.   • Some Newport Verizon users experienced wireless voice and data issues starting Wednesday at noon as the company works to fix the outage—engineers remain on the job but have not provided a timeline for restoration.  The Newport Daily News

  • The Preservation Society of Newport County will offer free admission to The Breakers on Martin Luther King Jr. Day — the historic mansion will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with last entry at 4 p.m., and capacity limits may cause wait times.  What's Up Newp
  • Spring Bull Gallery on Bellevue Ave hosts its 35th annual Fakes and Forgeries exhibition opening reception Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m, where art curator Michael Rose returns as judge — he will announce winners and award $850 in prizes across five categories at 3 p.m.  What's Up Newp
  • Jamestown Arts Center will host its second JAC Frost celebration on Jan. 24 with an immersive projection art installation by digital artist Julio Berroa.   • Rhode Island residents adjusted their spending as the consumer price index climbed 2.7% in December. Experts noted that wages did not keep pace with rising prices, prompting cuts at restaurants and grocery stores.  WJAR NBC 10

  • Emily Ryan, daughter of Middletown Police Chief Jason Ryan, received a scholarship yesterday from the Rhode Island Police Chiefs Association (an award for children of active law enforcement officers). She studies biology and pre-health at Colby College in Maine.  What's Up Newp

  • Cashman Downes, in his senior season, is a top Rhode Island wrestler after returning to the sport he left in middle school. On Tuesday at Aquidneck Island, he helped win a 45-36 match and ranked 12th in New England in the 150-pound class (after recovering from a torn meniscus).  The Newport Daily News
  • Local high school hoops recapped Wednesday as Classical edged Hendricken 66-56, Shea outpaced East Providence, and standout players boosted scores; today the schedule offers basketball, swimming, and wrestling contests at local venues + schools.  The Newport Daily News
