CULTURE NEWS

  • The fifth installment of a local series reviews Division Street’s historic homes that date to colonial and 19th-century times, highlighting key stories such as Rev. Samuel Hopkins's anti-slavery work and the Peter Bours House’s role as a hub for Black education (reflecting early community initiatives) (further enriching local heritage).  Newport This Week
  • On Jan. 14, Rose Island Lighthouse & Fort Hamilton Trust launched its first permanent endowment fund with a $250,000 founding gift to support preservation and educational programming on the island. The fund is managed by the Rhode Island Foundation.  Newport This Week
  • Marble House is undergoing a $1.5 million geothermal upgrade led by The Preservation Society of Newport County; well drilling on the back lawn with 21,425-ft deep wells is in progress & the project is set to finish in late spring.  Newport This Week

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Newport School Committee voted on Jan. 13 to pilot moving fifth grade from Thompson Middle School to Pell Elementary next September. The district will assess academic progress and costs in May before finalizing the change.  Newport This Week
  • Rogers High School is raising $7,500 to fund portrait banners of graduating seniors on Broadway ahead of the 2026 ceremony. The fundraiser, led by Michelle Leys, had raised $1,955 from 23 donors as of yesterday and relies solely on community donations.  What's Up Newp
  • Grenon’s Newport Night Run returns Saturday, Apr. 4 at 7:30 p.m. at Rogers High School as Newport’s only after-dark road race featuring a 5K run/walk along Ocean Avenue and Hazard Road. Registration remains open with early pricing until Feb. 28. Proceeds will benefit the Newport Public Education Foundation.  What's Up Newp

  • Newport officials remind property owners to clear snow, sleet and ice from sidewalks within five hours after snowfall stops as more snow is forecast for the weekend. Warning letters were issued after the Jan. 18 storm and more are expected.  Newport This Week
  • Newport City Council approved a one-year pilot for a public health vending machine on Jan. 14 to supply life-saving items and hygiene products to program clients. City administration will choose its location with input from police and fire + the Newport Prevention Coalition, and the program will be monitored for a year.  Newport This Week
  • A heavy winter storm is forecast this weekend and RIPTA is urging riders to sign up for route-specific alerts via its website (ripta.com/schedules) and social media so they can plan for potential delays or cancellations if travel becomes unsafe.  What's Up Newp
  • Rep. Lauren H. Carson introduced two bills to protect maternal health services and keep Newport Hospital's birthing center open - any proposed service changes must go through a formal review and a Maternal Health Advisory Board will be established - and she declared today as Maternal Health Awareness Day.  What's Up Newp
