COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Starting the first week in February, the AARP Tax Aide program will offer free tax help at 10 Newport County sites for low and moderate income residents, using fully certified preparers to handle common IRS and state forms (an intake form must be completed before your appointment).  Newport This Week

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Aquidneck Island Land Trust announced 29 student winners of its 2025 Art & Writing Contest on Monday at The Pennfield School, with local students earning cash prizes and first-place winners’ schools set to receive grants for environmental science programs.  What's Up Newp
  • The Verona Quartet will perform at Newport Classical Recital Hall on Friday, Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. as part of the 2025-2026 Chamber Series, marking their Newport debut. Doors open at 7 p.m. with complimentary wine, and a post-concert reception will follow at The Brenton Hotel.  What's Up Newp
  • Local artist Estella Miller displays portrait drawings of Dr. Carter G. Woodson (the Father of Black History) and Harriet Tubman (a former slave and Underground Railroad leader) near the first-floor lobby of the public library.  Newport This Week
  • Newport Children’s Theatre received a grant from the van Beuren Charitable Foundation to expand its costume collection for productions with up to five changes per performance. Its new inventory will debut in the spring production “Into the Woods” at St. George’s School in Middletown, June 5-7.  What's Up Newp

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Newport Community School received a grant from the Equity Action Fund to continue after school programs at Thompson Middle School and Rogers High School — the funding will support the PROWD program and the Gay Straight Alliance to promote equity and well-being among students.  Newport This Week

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After winter storms, Newport sidewalks remain blocked as the city has not cleared snow from key areas (Equality and Congdon parks), prompting residents to help vulnerable neighbors navigate impassable paths.  Newport This Week
  • Newport officials are enforcing parking bans in several neighborhoods for snow removal today and Saturday, Jan. 31; vehicles left on streets risk towing. Affected residents should move cars off-street and sign up for emergency alerts + check the city website for details.  The Newport Daily News
  • UTIC, a local nonprofit, signed an agreement with NUWC Division Newport to work together on undersea technology. The group will host two virtual tech talks and one in-person tech showcase each year (linking industry and academic research).  Newport This Week

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A new short-term rental facility will be built at 105 Broadway next to Chomp Kitchen & Drinks. The four-story building will feature 11 units, first-floor retail shops, and underground parking, and is under review as it meets current zoning standards.  Newport This Week

SPORTS NEWS

  • Salve Regina men’s basketball broke a two-game losing streak with a 77-74 win over Emerson Tuesday night at Rodgers Recreation Center. The Seahawks, led by 18-point efforts from Sean Seymour + Pat Spenard, will return to action Saturday at 3 p.m. against MIT.  What's Up Newp
