  • Save The Bay will host its 50th annual swim on Saturday, Aug. 8, challenging athletes to cross 2 miles of water from Newport to Jamestown. Registration opens Monday, Mar. 2 at the Naval War College in Newport — the event supports local habitat restoration.  What's Up Newp
  • Hundreds gathered Sunday at the Wyndham Hotel in Middletown to celebrate the life of Carrigan Nelson, a Portsmouth advocate for childhood cancer who passed away on Christmas Day at Boston Children’s Hospital. Molly Andrade hosted tributes from family, friends and medical professionals that honored Nelson’s compassionate legacy.  What's Up Newp

  • Heritage Restaurant Group announced Monday it is under contract to acquire The Mews Tavern, a Main Street landmark since 1947. The deal is set to close later this year and the restaurant will remain at 456 Main St while George McAuliffe stays with the new team (a community hub).  What's Up Newp

  • Veronica Mays’ art quilt exhibit, The African American Sampler Quilt, is on display through February 28 at the Newport Public Library (300 Spring Street) as part of her 9th Annual Black History Month Display.   • The Newport St. Patrick's Day Parade committee announced events leading to the 70th parade on March 14 at 11 a.m. A fundraiser on Feb. 22, breakfast on March 1, Grand Marshal roast on March 7 + Family Day event at Martin Recreation Center on March 14 will draw locals.  The Newport Daily News

  • High school seniors in Newport County with artistic talent can apply for a $2,000 Tinney Family Arts Scholarship offered by the Arts and Cultural Alliance through Friday, May 8—honoring the local family known for saving Belcourt Castle from demolition.  What's Up Newp

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Boat owners in Newport are moving from single-use shrink wrap to custom reusable covers from Kinder Industries, which last 10 years and lower plastic waste at marinas. While larger boats still use shrink wrap, small owners say the change saves money (a cost-effective switch) and cuts environmental impact.  The Public's Radio

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, the American Heart Association released its update on heart disease and stroke numbers, showing heart disease remains the top killer and strokes are rising. Dr. Weiss — a Newport Hospital cardiologist — said new treatments with RNA interference and medications may soon help improve heart health.  The Newport Daily News
