COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The New England Patriots have supported local nonprofits with interactive initiatives that include training camp visits with Boys Town New England and personalized shopping events with the Boys + Girls Club of Pawtucket; community leaders say the efforts have created lasting memories for area children.  The Newport Daily News
  • Middletown Police Department welcomed a 12-week-old black lab named Luke as its first comfort and compassion K-9 — he is expected to boost morale in the community policing division. Donated by Dame Dog Labradors and sponsored by Newport’s Wag Nation, the pup joins other comfort K-9s on Aquidneck Island.  WJAR NBC 10

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire broke out at Castle Hill Inn on Ocean Drive Thursday night — guests and staff were safely evacuated as firefighters work to put out the blaze, and the cause remains unknown.  What's Up Newp

CULTURE NEWS

  • Newport’s Brenton Point State Park will soon see the renewal of its neglected Japanese Garden to honor Japanese culture, history and aesthetics. The project plans to plant cherry trees and host cultural events while creating a nonprofit to share the city’s ties with Japan.  Newport This Week
  • Hayley Williams & Friends will perform on Friday, July 24 at Fort Adams State Park as the first act for the Newport Folk Festival's 67th year. Tickets sold out seconds on Wednesday, adding to the excitement for this summer event.  What's Up Newp
  • Bravo announced that Real Housewives of Rhode Island, known as Small State, Big Drama, will premiere at 9 p.m. on April 2 and move to Sundays at 9 p.m. from April 5. The show will capture dramatic scenes at Newport’s historic Seaview Terrace and on Block Island.  WJAR NBC 10
  • Bravo released the 'Real Housewives of Rhode Island' trailer showing local cast members facing drama in relationships, business ventures, and family ties. The series will premiere Thursday, Apr. 2 at 9 p.m. on Bravo with new episodes streaming the next day on Peacock.  The Newport Daily News

  • A proposal to raise the state income tax on millionaires from 5.99% to 8.99%—a move that could drive away key investors—has local business leaders in Greater Newport warning that the change may slow the region’s steady job growth.  Newport This Week

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Department of Environmental Management announced on Thursday that the Town of Tiverton will receive a $500,000 grant to secure a conservation easement on 49 acres overlooking Mount Hope Bay. The project will keep the land open for public use.  What's Up Newp

  • Middletown Town Council named six residents to an Academic Integration Advisory Committee to advise on regionalizing Newport and Middletown public schools on Feb. 2. Newport City Council will consider appointing six individuals to its education commission on Feb. 11.  Newport This Week

  • The Newport Yacht Club will hold a blood drive to honor American Heart Month on Sunday, Feb. 22 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in its clubhouse (110 Long Wharf).  Newport This Week
  • Newport City Council passed a resolution to launch a pilot program installing public health vending machines that offer harm reduction supplies (including Narcan and fentanyl test strips) to help prevent overdoses and support residents with substance use disorders by operating outside normal hours.  Newport This Week
