COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Employee-owners of Castle Hill Inn expressed deep gratitude for the swift work of Newport Fire Department and neighboring teams after a fire broke out last Thursday, Feb. 5 near 9:30 p.m., saving the historic inn and keeping guests safe.  What's Up Newp
  • Rogers High junior Grace Muenter started a diaper bank this fall, collecting diapers, pull ups, wipes and baby body wash for families in need across Aquidneck Island (local businesses helped spread the word and families can now request emergency supplies via an anonymous hotline).  Newport This Week

CULTURE NEWS

  • Dr. Akeia de Barros Gomes will preview the upcoming Black history center on Aquidneck Island during a talk at Middletown Library on Thursday, Feb. 26 (6:30 to 7:30 p.m.); the center will open on Juneteenth.  What's Up Newp
  • Nate Smith, a Grammy-winning drummer and producer, was named artistic director of the Newport Jazz Festival and will lead the festival at Fort Adams State Park from July 31 through Aug. 2 during his three-year term.  What's Up Newp

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local councils in Newport and Middletown have formed six-member committees to advise on possible school district regionalization. The committees will complete a report by May 31 outlining plans for enhanced student access and outcomes.  Newport This Week
  • Channing Church is accepting applications for the Margit Baum Fund Scholarship — an award offering up to $3,000 for Newport graduating seniors with financial need who have been admitted to college. Completed applications must be received by May 1.  Newport This Week
  • Newport summer camps offer kids fun and skill-building programs. They include tennis at the Hall of Fame Tennis Club Camp for ages 8–16, equestrian lessons, baseball sessions, theater workshops, and singing classes (each program offers a unique way to learn and grow).  Newport This Week

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City Council and the Beach Commission reviewed three plans for protecting Easton’s Beach at a Feb. 4 workshop. The proposals range from minimal phased dunes to a full natural barrier that may cost between $6.5 and $12 million (coastal engineers provided service life estimates) as officials plan resilience improvements.  Newport This Week

  • On Feb. 11, Brown University’s Center for Advancing Health Policy held a summit at South Street Landing where experts discussed Rhode Island’s primary care shortage, burdensome prior authorization rules, and future Medicaid changes — issues that could impact coverage for thousands.  The Newport Daily News
  • Newport Mental Health integrates physical and behavioral healthcare by teaching patients and children techniques such as regulated breathing to manage anxiety, panic attacks and PTSD. It is now seeking new Consumer Advisory Council members to help guide future mental healthcare initiatives.  The Newport Daily News
