CULTURE NEWS

  • Coggeshall Farm Museum in Bristol will host Maple Sugaring Days on March 7 and 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., where visitors learn to make maple sugar, join a scavenger hunt, craft and children's games. Admission is $10 for adults plus $5 for kids; members join free.  The Newport Daily News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Fuel prices are rising in the region as international tensions push oil costs higher + local suppliers report a 77-cent increase in three days that has drivers worried about further hikes.  WJAR NBC 10

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Rhode Island and the Department of Environmental Management will begin work to reopen the W. Alton Jones campus this spring, transforming it into a Natural Resource Center and Environmental Education Hub + restoring public access by the end of 2026.  WJAR NBC 10
  • Newport Public Schools' Superintendent Colleen Burns Jermain asked students and families to help shovel sidewalks so schools can reopen today. Community members were urged to focus on clearing the paths leading to school bus stops.  WJAR NBC 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Archives is collecting photographs from residents to document the record-setting Blizzard of 2026, which dropped over three feet of snow in Providence last week. Photos will appear on the Digital Archives later this week — residents are encouraged to submit their snapshots via email.  WJAR NBC 10

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Six home sales closed across Newport County last week as low inventory spurred competitive offers + quick closings. Tyler Bernadyn of REMAX Results noted that the spring market is heating up with buyers acting fast on a range of properties.  What's Up Newp

SPORTS NEWS

  • Fans can vote for the Longplex MVP in boys hockey regular season until Friday, Mar. 6 at midnight; the ballot features 10 top players chosen from both divisions + key season stats.  The Newport Daily News
  • Portsmouth High’s senior Cashman Downes won the wrestling state championship on March 2 by edging Caleb Appleyard 9-7 in a close match. He is the first champion from Portsmouth since 1962 and will compete next weekend at the New England Championships.  The Newport Daily News
