BUSINESS NEWS

  • Castle Hill Inn reopened yesterday after a February fire damaged its main building; guests stay in Beach Houses and Beach Cottages while The Chalet now runs operations (dining for day visitors remains unavailable until the spring reopening).  WJAR NBC 10

CULTURE NEWS

  • Voters have advanced 16 pizzerias into the next round of The Journal's Best Pizza contest, with voting open until 11:59 p.m. on March 13. Local favorites, including Al Forno and newcomer J.T. Commons, are set to compete in close culinary matchups.  The Newport Daily News
  • NBC 10 is launching a weekly series titled 'Amazing America 250: New England Pride' to honor the U.S. 250th birthday and highlight Southern New England’s rich heritage, from Newport's deep-water harbor to local historic sites; the series will air weekly.  WJAR NBC 10
  • Wicked, the musical coming to Rhode Island, stars Jessie Davidson from Middletown as Elphaba and Zoe Jensen as Glinda at the Providence Performing Arts Center and will run through March 22 + tickets are selling quickly.  Newport This Week

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • URI’s Sea Grant program has launched the Island Resilience Cohort with a $160,000 grant to help Aquidneck, Jamestown, Prudence and Block islands share climate adaptation research and coordinate peer learning to improve flood protection over the next two years.  Newport This Week
  • Gravy, the wild turkey injured in January, is healing at the Congress of the Birds wildlife clinic in Chepachet with no fractures and healed wounds, as founder Shieda Soleimani confirmed. The Environmental Management Department will choose a safer release site, and volunteer training runs each weekend in May.  Newport This Week
  • The Wildlife Rehabilitators Association of Rhode Island welcomed neonatal eastern gray squirrels rescued from a rooftop in Saunderstown on Thursday, March 5. The team will care for the animals as it supports wildlife recovery after treating over 7,000 cases in 2025.  WJAR NBC 10

  • Matthew Gray, president of Gray Matter Marketing and owner of Ragged Island Brewing Co., was elected chair of Discover Newport's board in December. He will use his local roots to support staff and guide a new tourism strategy that strengthens our coastal communities.  Newport This Week
  • The Rhode Island Department of Transportation is patching potholes caused by the freeze-thaw cycle while drivers can report car damage online — repairs on local roads may take weeks as crews work nonstop.  WJAR NBC 10

HEALTH NEWS

  • Following last week's historic winter storm, the Rhode Island Blood Center declared a blood emergency after over 1,500 canceled donations dropped the supply to less than two days for local hospitals. Officials urge eligible donors to schedule appointments as donations may save up to three lives.  What's Up Newp
