  • Dave and Grace Macchioni are in Colombia finalizing the adoption process for their daughter Zuly after a federal visa pause delayed their trip earlier this year. They expect to sign the adoption decree in about ten business days and return with her soon.  WJAR NBC 10

CULTURE NEWS

  • Audrain Motorsport will expand its Veteran Car Tour into a full weekend event from May 16 to May 18, featuring an opening drive and luncheon on May 16 at The Vanderbilt, Auberge Collection. Collectors can register online at $395 per car to join scenic tours through Newport and Bristol.  What's Up Newp
  • The Newport Art Museum will open its Play / Pretend exhibition on May 7 with a free public reception from 5 to 7 p.m. at 76 Bellevue Ave, featuring historic dolls, automata, and contemporary works that explore play in art + imagination.  What's Up Newp
  • Fishermen in 1996 pulled up a 14-foot skeleton off Block Island that locals later dubbed the Block Ness Monster, sparking curiosity about the legend (scientists say it was likely a basking shark).  The Newport Daily News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • URI researchers have logged over 1,000 bobcat sightings across Rhode Island + note that the cats are tolerant of people; they expect bobcat kittens to appear in the coming months to guide wildlife conservation practices.  The Newport Daily News
  • URI Watershed Watch seeks volunteer water monitors to check quality at local sites including First Beach this spring. Free training occurs (Apr. 2, 6:00–9:00 p.m. and Apr. 4, 9:00 a.m.–noon) with field sessions (Apr. 11 and 25) required before the May–Oct. season.  What's Up Newp

  • Foxes are illegal as pets because native red and gray foxes are protected and have not been domesticated, according to DEM (Department of Environmental Management). Permits are available only to certified organizations for educational purposes.  The Newport Daily News

  • Local fire officials advise Newport residents to use the daylight saving time change on Sunday, Mar. 8 at 2 a.m. to test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors— a simple maintenance chore that may save lives.  The Newport Daily News

  • Newport gets set for a festive St. Patrick’s Day parade on Saturday, March 15 as local bars and restaurants plan special menus including breakfast at IHOP (this year’s Big Daddy Award winner) and treats from Co-Dough, inviting residents to enjoy music, corned beef and drinks after a snowy winter.  The Newport Daily News
