GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • RIPTA will detour routes 60, 63 and 67 on Saturday, March 14 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade—rerouting buses from Thames Street and America’s Cup Avenue to JT Connell Highway and Farewell Street.  What's Up Newp
  • U.S. Census Bureau data shows that between July 2024 and July 2025 Rhode Island lost 1,551 residents to other states (while growing by 4,106 thanks to international migration and births), pointing to ongoing population trends.  The Newport Daily News

  • Pat Lyons, a Rhode Island native and La Salle alum, was named URI’s new Vice President and Director of Athletics at the Ryan Center on Wednesday morning. He signed a five-year deal with a $350,000 salary + $20,000 signing bonus, and he will lead efforts to boost the athletics program.  The Newport Daily News
  • Three Olympic gold medalists will lead the 2nd Annual Food Allergy-Friendly Soccer Clinic on Sunday, May 3, from 9 a.m. to noon at St. George’s School (372 Purgatory Road) for children ages 5 to 16; tickets are $150 and proceeds support expanding epinephrine access across Newport County.  What's Up Newp
  • Newport Gulls have restocked St. Paddy's Day merchandise ahead of the parade that is just over a week away. Fans can buy T-shirts, sweatshirts, and hats at the team store to show their support for the eight-time NECBL champs.  Newport This Week
  • In the tournament quarterfinals, Barrington (53-49), Ponaganset (63-42), Westerly (77-39), Central (51-38) and Portsmouth (51-48) advanced.
