EDUCATION NEWS

  • Newport City Council voted 4—3 on Wednesday to form an Academic Integration Committee that will study merging certain school services with Middletown if they agree. Supporters say the committee could save money and boost state funding for school projects, while opponents worry it might delay more urgent regional improvements.  The Newport Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rhode Island is short of primary care doctors, so a bill by Joseph Solomon Jr. would let foreign-trained doctors with proper certificates work under a limited license in areas that need care. State health officials worry the plan may require extra staff to check each doctor’s record — and the bill is under review by the House Corporations committee.  The Newport Daily News
  • RIPTA will use bus route detours in Newport on Saturday, March 15th, 2025 to allow the Saint Patrick’s Day parade to pass, affecting Routes 60, 63 and 67 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. — riders should plan alternate stops at the Newport Transportation Center for a smoother trip —.  ABC6

HEALTH NEWS

  • Advocates from The Samaritans call for Rhode Island officials to install temporary suicide prevention barriers on key bridges—Jamestown, Pell, Mount Hope and Sakonnet—to stop bridge-related suicides, noting that Washington Bridge already has these measures. They urge Gov. McKee and state lawmakers to support bills H-5776 and S710 so the state can act quickly to save lives.  The Newport Daily News
