  • Newport residents can apply for tree plantings on city property through the Community Tree Program until April 15, with planting scheduled to begin in April and decisions announced by April 30—those in the Health Equity Zone receive a free tree while others pay $125.  Newport This Week

CRIME NEWS

  • Diane Drake, whose unsolved murder in 1980 left her family grieving, is honored today with a memorial concert by the Rotunda at Easton's Beach from 3 to 7 p.m.—the event also invites community help to build a permanent tribute and nonprofit for families affected by violence.  The Newport Daily News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Aquidneck Island residents may review and comment on the draft Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan available online — the plan outlines how Newport, Middletown and Portsmouth will protect flood plains, drinking water and coastal infrastructure from climate risks. Municipal councils will vote on the plan later this month or early April before sending it to emergency management and FEMA for final approval.  Newport This Week

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On March 12, Newport City Council approved zoning code amendments that ban large party decks on upper floors and create new residential districts with size limits for second and third-floor decks (existing decks remain exempt). The changes will be considered in a second reading vote to protect neighborhoods from oversized deck expansions.  Newport This Week
  • Today, the NTSB reported that the Claiborne Pell Newport Bridge, built in 1969 and owned by the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority, is one of 68 U.S. bridges flagged for urgent evaluation of its risk of catastrophic collapse from vessel strikes—officials are set to use the AASHTO method to calculate the bridge's annual frequency of collapse and will develop a risk reduction plan if needed.  What's Up Newp

  • Measles cases have risen to 301 in 15 states, though Rhode Island's high vaccination rate means the risk to residents stays low. A recent case involved an unvaccinated child with international travel, and health officials urge anyone unsure of their vaccination status to consult a provider—stressing the vaccine's strong safety record.  The Newport Daily News
