  • 102-year-old Monica Rita Marcucci, born in Newport and known for her many local roles, passed away on Wednesday, March 18 in Middletown, surrounded by family. Visiting hours are Sunday, March 22 at O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, with a Mass Monday at St. Lucy’s Church.  Newport This Week

CULTURE NEWS

  • Amy Poehler hosted a podcast on March 17 with Viola Davis to discuss their New England roots & how growing up in Rhode Island shaped their accents and memories. Davis recalled winning a local skit contest in Central Falls that boosted her confidence to act.  The Newport Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The ongoing government shutdown is causing TSA wait times at T.F. Green to rise, leading some passengers to arrive three to four hours early. Officials say delays are normal now but warn that if the shutdown continues, longer lines + greater travel disruptions may follow.  WJAR NBC 10
  • Rhode Island hospitals are asking the legislature for new funds during budget season due to reduced federal subsidies and tougher Medicaid reenrollment, factors that could affect essential services (including Newport’s Brown University Health), Dr. Michael Fine noted.  What's Up Newp
  • The state is mailing corrected tax forms (W-2C) to about 3,200 higher education workers after retirement contributions were reported incorrectly on their original W-2s. Affected employees may need to amend their returns if they already filed.  WJAR NBC 10

HEALTH NEWS

  • Amid Q1 operating losses, Brown Health has not ruled out cuts to Newport Hospital’s accredited birthing center. A community advisory panel is set to meet for a third time on April 28 with recommendations expected this summer, and the unit remains open until Sept. 30 due to public pressure.  What's Up Newp

  • Twenty-seven open houses are held this weekend across Newport County to help buyers see homes up close.
