- ➤ Newport police responded early Wednesday morning at Ocean Drive and Hazard Road after a Toyota Corolla hit a tree at about 12:43 a.m.—rescuers freed a trapped 29-year-old woman now in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital and treated a 39-year-old man with upper body injuries who is in stable condition. - ➤ A 29-year-old Fall River woman was critically injured in a car crash on Ocean Drive in Newport on March 26 at 12:43 a.m.—officers found her 2001 white Toyota Corolla with major damage against a tree and emergency crews cut her from the wreckage to take her to Rhode Island Hospital—while a 39-year-old man in the car sustained upper body injuries and is in stable condition. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Starting Friday, March 28 at 9 a.m., the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority will close an eastbound lane on the Newport Pell Bridge for construction until Monday, March 31 at 6 a.m., and beginning Friday at 6 p.m., crews will shift the median barrier to create a one-lane-in-each-direction pattern for the weekend. Motorists are advised to plan for delays and use caution when driving through the work zone. The Newport Daily News
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Experts at URI’s Center for Vector-Borne Disease say tick sightings have increased in southern areas over the last two weeks with more lone star ticks now noted along the coast, which can cause a red meat allergy. Residents are advised to wear treated clothing and perform daily tick checks (for both Lyme disease and red meat allergy risks) and restart pet tick treatments (as recommended) to stay safe during the season.
