ECONOMY NEWS

  • Newport booked 41 cruise stops for the 2026 season compared to over 50 last year, potentially lowering annual visitor numbers by about 30,000. City officials also noted that a proposed fee hike aiming to funnel additional funds to the state has met strong local opposition.  Newport This Week

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Newport Public Schools is facing a $2.9 million shortfall from current and next year budgets because of rising student needs and lower enrollment. School officials plan structural changes and city funding requests following a March 10 meeting.  Newport This Week
  • Last year, the Newport Kiwanis Club awarded two $3,000 scholarships — based on financial need, citizenship, and character — to Aquidneck Island high school seniors with forms available at local counseling offices. Adriyonna Lockhart from Rogers attended American University and Cody Garcia from Middletown enrolled at Nichols College.  Newport This Week

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On March 18, volunteers and scientists counted 590 seals off Narragansett Bay in Save The Bay’s annual statewide survey. Save The Bay seal tours depart from Perrotti Park in Newport on Saturdays and Sundays through April 26 and daily during school vacation (April 20-24) for safe wildlife viewing.  Newport This Week

  • Henderson Home Commission is reviewing options to secure operations as rising costs threaten its Clarke Street home serving older residents since 1910.
