CRIME NEWS

  • Newport police arrested a Providence man on Wednesday night for allegedly stabbing a Newport man in the back near 12 Dudley Avenue, and the victim was taken to Rhode Island Hospital in stable condition while officers later located suspect Hezekiah Mendoza on Wellington Avenue by 3:22 a.m. Thursday—he now faces charges of assault with intent to commit felonies and disorderly conduct with arraignment set for Thursday.  ABC6
  • Newport police arrested a 39-year-old Providence man—Hezekiah Mendoza early Thursday after a stabbing on Wednesday evening injured a 35-year-old resident at 12 Dudley Ave, and detectives tracked him after witnesses reported a red 2004 Honda CRV with California plates leaving the scene.  What's Up Newp

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Newport Historical Society is planning a Center for Black History at the Wanton-Lyman-Hazard House, set to open in summer – today BankNewport representatives presented a $100,000 check while students from Rogers High School's AP Black History course toured the site. A $300,000 Save America’s Treasures grant from the National Park Service, secured with help from Senator Jack Reed, will fund additional upgrades to the 328-year-old building.  What's Up Newp
  • The 2025 Newport Classical Music Festival will run from July 4—22 and feature 29 concerts at 11 venues with performances by artists such as Broadway star Jessica Vosk and pianist Inon Barnatan; tickets will go on sale to the general public on April 9.  The Newport Daily News

  • Gov. Dan McKee said on Thursday, March 27 that Rhode Island is receiving over $220 million from the federal government to rebuild the westbound side of the Washington Bridge at the State House—$30 million has already been drawn down and timelines remain unchanged.  WJAR NBC 10
  • Rep. Terri Cortvriend and Sen. Victoria Gu introduced bills that let towns keep shore access by keeping old roads for walking and biking as sea levels rise. The bills also set rules for parking changes near these roads—requiring public comment and accessibility checks to ensure that everyone stays able to reach the shore.  What's Up Newp
