ECONOMY NEWS

  • On March 26, URI released an economic study that found the university generated $2 billion in economic activity in fiscal 2025 and supported 17,000 jobs. The report shows every state dollar returned $17.39 (including $1.46 billion in indirect spending), with South County campuses driving nearly $1 billion in local impact.  The Newport Daily News
  • The Rhode Island Public Utilities Commission met Friday to propose lowering Rhode Island Energy electric bills by $8.43 monthly while raising gas rates by $11.76 annually, effective April 1. It will meet March 31 to finalize adjustments based on usage forecasts (additional allowances may alter the final rates).  WJAR NBC 10

  • Newport educator Jo Eva Gaines received the Rhode Island Foundation's 2026 Black History Month Award for her decades of service in public education.
