Alice, an 88-year-old retired retail worker who fell last fall and was moved to a nursing home amid high private costs and brief visits from understaffed care, is now working with a neighbor to secure an accessible apartment—she wants to cook simple meals and stay near the community she loves.

Newport City Council unanimously approved a resolution on March 26 supporting Senate Bill 0678 that would let the city add a 7% tax on sales from privately owned parking lots charging visitor fees.

Officials said the ordinance may exempt nonprofit lots—such as IYRS—to ease concerns about revenue impact.

Rhode Island Energy will lower electric rates from 16.4 cents to 10.1 cents per kilowatt hour for most residential customers starting April 1 while municipal programs will see similar cuts on May 1—regulators raised concerns that planned investments in grid and gas infrastructure could lead to rising costs over time.
