- ➤ Today, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Newport County announced that Joseph Pratt, the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer, will retire effective May 15—ending a tenure that grew the club from 5 staff and a $250,000 deficit to a thriving organization serving over 2000 youth annually. Pratt’s leadership earned the club a 5-star rating and set the stage for a planned expansion of the Central Clubhouse at 95 Church Street. What's Up Newp
- ➤ NBC 10’s Dan Jaehnig hosted the Empty Bowls event with the Rhode Island Food Bank Wednesday night as artists made handmade bowls symbolizing empty bowls in the community; the event raised over $200,000 to fund food assistance for about 84,400 Rhode Islanders each month. WJAR NBC 10
- ➤ RENEWport will host a free community dinner for families of Newport children in 3rd and 4th grade at Pell Elementary School on April 10 from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m.—families will enjoy dinner, crafts, music and a chance to win one of ten $100 Walmart gift cards. - ➤ Newport County is hosting several weekend events as Daffodil Days begins Saturday with an opening ceremony from noon to 12:30 p.m. outside the Clarke Cooke House on Aquineck Island, a free poet reading with Colin Channer in Jamestown is set for 2 p.m., a Spring Garden Expo will run in Tiverton from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., an 'Ocean Rising II' art show opens at Gallery Sitka from 2 to 4 p.m., and a 'Captured Moments' photography reception takes place in Middletown from 5 to 7 p.m.—all offering locals a chance to welcome spring despite the showers. - ➤ Rhode Island’s state budget relies on over $5 billion in federal funds, and the McKee Administration reported that the state has lost or is at risk of losing $91.6 million in federal dollars. The cuts affect departments like Health—where about $31 million in CDC grants were terminated—as well as Education and Environmental Management while state agencies await further federal funding decisions.
