  • Newport Little League will host its 2025 Annual Fundraiser at O'Brien's Pub on May 1 from 6 to 9 p.m. for a $20 admission that includes a drink, light appetizers, a silent auction, and raffles (proceeds support field repairs, equipment upgrades and scholarships) (21+ event).  What's Up Newp
  • Pope Francis appointed Bruce Lewandowski as the tenth Bishop of Providence on Tuesday — he served as Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Baltimore before his appointment. The Diocese held a press conference Tuesday morning to introduce him to the community.  WJAR NBC 10

  • Pope Francis appointed Most Reverend Bruce Alan Lewandowski as the 10th Bishop of Providence on Tuesday morning; the 57-year-old former auxiliary bishop from Baltimore will hold a press conference at 10:00 a.m.—he will lead Holy Mass at noon in the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul.  The Newport Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Rhode Island House Committee on Corporations will soon hear a controversial bill to regulate kratom—an Indonesian plant some say can treat anxiety and opioid addiction—while a Senate committee is set to review a bill that would bar checking a patient’s immigration status. No vote is scheduled on either measure as lawmakers consider the proposals after a similar bill was vetoed last year.  ABC6
  • Rhode Island residents must upgrade to a Real ID if they plan to fly soon—only 58% of licenses were compliant as of April 1. Travelers should book an in-person appointment at a DMV office or AAA branch with the required documents, as new IDs will be mailed in two weeks and the rule takes effect May 7.  The Newport Daily News
  • U.S. Navy Vice Adm. Shoshana Chatfield was fired over the weekend. She had served as the first woman president of the Naval War College in Newport from 2019 to 2023 and was the U.S. representative to NATO’s Military Committee—her promotion had been delayed amid protest over Pentagon policy.  What's Up Newp
