  • Newport Restaurant Group announced its expanded partnership with Greenplaces to improve its sustainability strategy and better measure its carbon footprint. Since 2022, the group offset all its Scope 1 emissions—6,500 mT of carbon dioxide equivalent, equal to removing 1,413 gas-powered vehicles—and has invested in renewable energy and local recycling programs.  What's Up Newp

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Edward King House hosts a welcome reception (today at 5 p.m.) to celebrate 25 years of Newport’s Sister City relationship with Kinsale, Ireland. A wee parade (April 12 at 2 p.m.) will start from City Hall to the Colony House.  Newport This Week
  • A report on a study of an 18th century shipwreck in Newport Harbor that might be the HMS Endeavour was given to the Rhode Island State Archives on Tuesday. Researchers said they did not find enough proof to confirm the ship's identity and recommended no further digging unless new questions arise — the report will aid future research.  The Newport Daily News
  • Newport Christmas, a new Hallmark film set to air during the 2025 holiday season, began filming in Newport after crews shot scenes at Bowen+Wharf on April 7. The movie follows a woman from 1905 who time travels to the present and meets a local historian.  The Newport Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Rhode Island State Senate passed free universal prekindergarten legislation for 3- and 4-year-olds, and the bill now heads to the House for a vote by the Education Committee. Supporters say the program will expand using Head Start, school districts, licensed family child-care providers, and child care networks to reach a goal of enrolling at least 70% of children.  WJAR NBC 10

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Experts from Colorado State University forecast an active Atlantic hurricane season with up to 17 storms possibly forming and nine of these potentially becoming hurricanes—Rhode Island faces a 25% chance of a tropical storm and a 9% chance of a hurricane; the forecast was released in early April with warm Atlantic waters and low odds for El Niño boosting storm activity. Residents should monitor further updates as details about storm paths are expected soon.  The Newport Daily News

  • Yesterday, the House approved legislation sponsored by Rep. Terri Cortvriend that freezes changes to our 2024 energy code until Jan. 1, 2030 — a step to guard our energy savings from potential federal rollbacks and set a clear path for future updates with General Assembly approval.  What's Up Newp
  • The House of Representatives approved a bill sponsored by Rep. Jason Knight to allow multi-family housing development in parts of the Urban Services Boundary with available public water and sewer capacity—meant to provide more affordable housing—and sent it to the Senate for review.  What's Up Newp
