  • Turning Around Ministries supports Newport County residents facing reentry challenges during April’s Second Chance Month. The nonprofit helps with benefits, transportation, and health care access, and soon local letters will share stories of community support.  Newport This Week

CULTURE NEWS

  • Newport Historical Society unveils an interactive exhibition 'Occupied? Newport and the Fight for Independence' to mark the 250th anniversary of the Declaration — the exhibit runs weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. through year-end and features maps, artifacts, and personal narratives.  Newport This Week
  • Newport's Rosecliff galleries host the 'Full Circle' exhibition featuring a scale model of the 'Mouse' sculpture — originally installed in 1974 at Brenton Point State Park — that looks back at Monumenta's impact on modern art. The exhibit runs until May 3.  Newport This Week

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Apr. 2, the Newport School Committee debated school security at the new Rogers High School when member Elizabeth Cullen called for a badge system for the secondary entrance—citing safety concerns—while other members maintained that the main entrance should be used. The district will review policies at the next meeting.  Newport This Week
  • Applications for the Mosaic Club Scholarship are available at guidance offices at Rogers, Middletown, and Portsmouth High Schools for graduating seniors entering college or (vocational, technical, or trade school). Applicants must apply by April 24 and recipients will be selected based on volunteer work, an essay, and recommendations.  Newport This Week
  • The Arts & Cultural Alliance is accepting applications for the Tinney Family Arts Scholarship, a $2,000 award for Newport County high school seniors or home-schooled students planning to continue arts education. Applications must be submitted by May 8.  Newport This Week
  • Newport School Committee discussed advertising an interim superintendent role during its April 4 meeting as discussions continue over a potential merger with Middletown schools. The committee expects to name a candidate by the end of May — ensuring stable leadership until a regional vote decides the district’s future.  Newport This Week

HEALTH NEWS

  • Brown University Healthcare announced it will keep the Noreen Stonor Drexel Birthing Center open at Newport Hospital, helping to ease emergency transport needs for local expecting mothers by providing local OB-GYN care.
