COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Newport County has many events planned: Senator Jack Reed will hold a community conversation in Jamestown on April 15 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. to discuss government cuts, Newport will open a new boat mooring field in the harbor this summer with a lottery in May, and a driver's education class will run at the Jamestown Fire Station from May 5 to June 16. House Finance Committee Chairman Marvin L. Abney was inducted into the Officer Candidate School Hall of Fame on March 28, and free Stop the Bleed training is offered in Portsmouth on April 23—additionally, Newport Contemporary Ballet has launched interview videos and Arts Around the Fire will host a Discover Newport CEO event on April 23.  The Newport Daily News
  • The City of Newport opened a new playground at King Park on higher ground to keep it safe from high tides so children can play freely. The Public Services team will add a bike rack and improve the landscaping in the next few days.  What's Up Newp

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Jane Pickens Theater and Event Center will mark the 50th anniversary of Jaws over Memorial Day weekend with three screenings on May 23rd at 7:30 p.m., May 25th at 7 p.m., and May 26th at 4:30 p.m.—each showing will offer live music, beer and wine tastings, and a shark touch-tank while tickets cost between $13 and $20 with member discounts available. Attendees will also be entered into a raffle for a Narragansett x Jaws prize pack and VIP summer experiences.  What's Up Newp
  • Acclaimed artists Megan and Murray McMillan will debut their immersive video installation—This Collapsed and Expanding Breath—at Jamestown Arts Center on April 25. The exhibit shows sculptural elements and video exploring celestial mechanics and family ties and will run free until June 14.  What's Up Newp

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Preservation Society of Newport County will host a free forum called Iconic Trees of Newport II at Rosecliff on May 8th at 6 p.m. to discuss beech leaf disease and other threats to the urban forest—registration is required and local experts from several organizations will share treatment strategies and management ideas.  What's Up Newp

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Newport City Council approved a revised sales agreement that will let BCM Realty turn the former Coggeshall School building into 32 apartments after 12 years of negotiations. The deal requires lease terms of at least 12 months and limits 40% of the units to workforce housing rents for ten years—steps meant to offer middle-income housing for local residents.  The Newport Daily News
