The committee did not use its $1 million surplus to save jobs—resulting in an extra $425,000 being removed from the general operating fund to address a $2 to $4 million shortfall from federal relief funds. - ➤ On April 10th, the Rhode Island Supreme Court backed a 2023 decision that removed the current congregation from Touro Synagogue and let New York-based Congregation Shearith Israel take over the building and all it holds—ruling that a 1945 deal did not require prior agreement. Local Congregation Ahavath Israel, which has deep roots in Newport, will now lead worship at the historic site, ending decades of legal dispute. Newport This Week
