COMMUNITY NEWS

  • MLK Community Center seeks volunteers to expand its Hunger Relief Programs. The center already assists 8,700 Newport County residents with nearly 1.4 million meals, deliveries, fresh produce, and breakfast services and plans to boost support this Spring and Summer (contact Hollie Johnson at 401-846-4828).  Newport This Week
  • This weekend, Newport County will host Cynthia Nixon at The Breakers with a reception at 5:30 p.m. and a discussion at 6:30 p.m. on April 26 along with a free arm wrestling championship at the VFW Post on April 25 & supporting local veterans.  The Newport Daily News
  • Newport County is busy as Rep. Cortvriend leads a housing panel Monday, April 27 at Innovate Newport and the Friends of the Middletown Public Library hosts its annual sale May 1-2.   • T.F. Green International Airport in Warwick is launching a new weekly direct flight to Praia on May 4 with TACV Cabo Verde Airlines — it will use a Boeing 737 MAX 8 with 174 economy seats and is designed to support visiting friends and relatives while opening broader leisure tourism.  WJAR NBC 10

  • The Newport Jazz Festival announced a lineup featuring Herbie Hancock, Jonathan Batiste Trios, Thundercat and more for the summer event at Fort Adams State Park from July 31 to Aug. 2. Officials said additional ticket details and lineup segments will be released on Thursday.  WJAR NBC 10
  • The Chanler at Cliff Walk unveiled a redesigned lobby and updated guest spaces Tuesday in a multi-year collaboration between Proprietress Lani Shufelt and Studio Valerius.   • HBO's 'The Gilded Age' cast filmed its fourth season yesterday at The Breakers mansion in Newport — stars including Carrie Coon and Christine Baranski were spotted on set, bringing historical drama to life.  WJAR NBC 10
  • Sagres Restaurant in Fall River served dinner to 200 cast and crew members of HBO’s The Gilded Age on Friday while filming its fourth season in Newport, delivering Portuguese dishes – paella, chicken Mozambique, and carne de porco – on short notice.  The Newport Daily News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Rhode Island regulators approved a fuel surcharge for the Prudence Island ferry effective May 1 to offset rising diesel costs ahead of the busy summer season; riders will pay 60 cents per passenger and a $3.55 fee per vehicle trip (double on round trips).  WJAR NBC 10
  • RI drivers face high gas prices near $4 a gallon after unrest in the Middle East drove up fuel costs on Wednesday, April 22. Many Pawtucket residents have switched to public transport or shopped around for lower prices, with some expecting relief soon.  The Newport Daily News

  • Salve Regina University announced Wednesday that BankNewport, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and Tufts Health Plan will sponsor its mobile health outreach program.   • USA TODAY ranked Rhode Island Red Food Tours tenth in the best food tours nationwide. The Newport tour offers seafood tastings and local history insights with prices starting at $79 per person (tours also run in Providence).  The Newport Daily News
