  • A local letter by Stephen Sullivan challenges Sweet Berry Farm’s plan to remove over 1,300 fruit trees for an Instagrammable barn that could change its role as a working farm.   • Rough Point earned Level 1 arboretum accreditation from ArbNet last Thursday as announced by the Newport Restoration Foundation.   • Discover Newport announced a sponsorship program that will award up to $200,000 per year to groups working on tourism projects across Newport and Bristol counties. Awards will range from $1,000 to $15,000 and applications open May 1 in a quarterly cycle starting July 1.  What's Up Newp

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Rhode Island celebrated its 129th Arbor Day yesterday as DEM announced nearly $200K in grants at Samuel Slater Memorial Park to boost urban forests. Eleven projects will benefit from funding under two programs that include $10K awards for local efforts in East Providence, Newport, and neighboring areas.  What's Up Newp
  • Conservationists in Rhode Island are studying the endangered American burying beetle on Block Island, the piping plover whose numbers have doubled, the rare Eastern spadefoot toad in Richmond, the saltmarsh sparrow in Warren, and the declining horseshoe crab along the shoreline; efforts continue to combat climate change and habitat loss.  The Newport Daily News
  • Mabel Norman Cerio gifted her Paradise Farm property to create Norman Bird Sanctuary, a nature haven on Aquidneck Island for nearly a century. The sanctuary offers Wednesday and Sunday bird walks and will host Beach Bash on July 29 and Harvest Fair on Oct. 3-4.  What's Up Newp

  • Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee attacked his primary rival Helena Foulkes Friday over her role at CVS—a homegrown company—citing the Omnicare acquisition that led to bankruptcy and a $950 million fine, even as polls show he trails in the race.  The Newport Daily News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Rhode Island Department of Health reported six wild animals in Providence County have tested positive for rabies over the past six weeks and urged residents to avoid animals acting oddly. Officials ask anyone who sees unusual animal behavior to call local animal control immediately.  The Newport Daily News
