COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On April 10, more than 125 community members gathered at Pell Elementary School for a dinner hosted by RENEWport to build ties among families of third and fourth graders. The event featured arts performances by Newport Contemporary Ballet, games and activities by local nonprofits, and food donated by Ben and Jerry's—showing efforts to connect the school system with the community.  Newport This Week
  • Newport County saw a financial education fair at Rogers High School on April 8, a community dinner at Pell Elementary on April 10, and an Easter event at the Portsmouth Community Playground on April 19. Looking ahead, the Potter League for Animals and the Women’s Resource Center will host a documentary screening on April 30 at the Potter League center in Middletown, the water main flushing will begin tomorrow and run through May 8, and Rosecliff will open an exhibition on May 30 that highlights Richard Morris Hunt’s legacy.  The Newport Daily News
  • Bike Newport has postponed Daffodil Ride 2025 to Sunday, April 27 so families will gather at Touro Park at 9:15 a.m. and ride 4 miles through over 1.3 million blooming daffodils, finishing at Ballard Park where 20,000 daffodils greet them — riders should dress in yellow, decorate their bikes, and bring helmets and water — prizes will be awarded for the best-decorated bike and outfit.  Newport This Week

  • The Newport Folk Festival is set for (July 25-27) in Newport, and general admission tickets have already sold out. The event will feature headliners (Goose, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Jensen McRae, and Remi Wolf & Friends) with more performers to be announced soon.  What's Up Newp

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • At Rhode Island’s 128th Arbor Day celebration, Governor Dan McKee and DEM announced urban forestry grants to boost local tree cover in the community. Newport Tree Conservancy received two grants totaling $60,000—$10,000 from the Urban and Community Forestry Program and $50,000 from Tree Equity RI—to fund green education and canopy efforts while Norman Bird Sanctuary got a $10,000 grant for its arboretum resiliency project.  What's Up Newp

  • After the Monday death of longtime Senate President Dominick Ruggerio, Senator Valarie Lawson sought the Senate President role while Senator Frank Ciccone aimed for the Majority Leader position—both lawmakers stressed a shared vision to move the chamber forward as they honored Ruggerio's legacy.  ABC6
  • The Middletown Planning Board unanimously approved zoning amendments and extra conditions for the Middletown Center development at 600-740 West Main Road, including limits on hotel height and an increase in affordable housing units—now the Town Council will review the changes at special meetings on June 23 and June 30 at 6 p.m. in the Gaudet Middle School cafetorium.  What's Up Newp
  • Governor Dan McKee and the Rhode Island AI Task Force are inviting residents to take an online survey on their experience with AI. Responses will be collected until May 9 — the survey will help guide future rules for using AI safely in government and local business.  What's Up Newp
