GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawmakers plan to reconsider a bill that would criminalize iGaming for 18—20-year-olds after it was defeated 7—5 by the House Judiciary Committee on April 22 amid concerns it might conflict with existing laws allowing in-person gambling. The measure—introduced at the request of the State Police—is opposed by critics including the ACLU and the Public Defender’s Office, who say it creates legal confusion and may violate House rules.  The Newport Daily News
  • The Rhode Island Department of Transportation announced that two extended weekend lane closures on Route 1 at the Route 138 interchange in North Kingstown will begin on May 1 for accelerated bridge construction. The southbound bridge will be replaced from 9 p.m. May 1 until 5 a.m. May 5 and the northbound bridge will be closed from 9 p.m. May 8 until before the morning commute on May 12 with detours set to maintain access to local businesses.  ABC6

SPORTS NEWS

  • Portsmouth High School hosted a pink out lacrosse game on April 25 to honor late Patricia 'Pat' Carrellas, mother of senior captain Margaux Boneu, whose family presented a scholarship at the game. The event featured a 50/50 raffle, bake sale, and gift baskets that raised money for Dana-Farber, +Prout edged Portsmouth 9-8 in a close contest+ with Boneu scoring four goals.  What's Up Newp
  • Bishop Hendricken alum Xavier Truss—who won two national championships at Georgia—signed an undrafted free agent deal with the Broncos; the West Warwick native will get his first NFL shot under Super Bowl champion head coach Sean Payton.  ABC6
  • North Kingstown native Dylan Poirier accepted an invitation to the New York Giants rookie minicamp—he played on the offensive line at the University of New Hampshire and was named Rhode Island Gatorade Player of the Year for NK in 2018.  ABC6
