  • Newport County will host a busy weekend of community events as Jane’s Walk Festival offers nine free neighborhood walks on May 3 and 4 starting at 9 a.m.—the Aquidneck Island National Police Parade will honor law enforcement on May 4 at 11:50 a.m. beginning at 317 West Main Road. Additional activities include Newport String Project concerts on May 3 at Rough Point and May 4 at United Congregational Church—art openings at Gallery Sitka on May 4 and DeBlois Gallery on May 3—and a living history encampment at Butts Hill Fort in Portsmouth featuring demonstrations and lectures.  The Newport Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Newport is accepting sponsorship applications for commemorative benches at the new Rogers High School's main entrances. The benches are made of black cast aluminum—built to withstand coastal weather—and sponsorship costs $3,701, including a personalized plaque.  What's Up Newp

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The House approved legislation sponsored by Rep. Cortvriend on April 29 to let towns keep public access to roads and trails using a qualified abandonment option — meaning a town may save maintenance costs while preserving use. The bill now goes to the Senate for further consideration.  What's Up Newp
  • Newport resident Keith Stokes—appointed as Historian Laureate by Secretary of State Gregg M. Amore after reviewing eight candidates—will serve until April 2030. He will attend his first public event on May 3 at the State House for Rhode Island Independence Day to showcase historical artifacts.  What's Up Newp

HEALTH NEWS

  • At a press conference on April 29, Gov. Dan McKee announced new measures—including an accelerated Medicaid rate review, revised payment rules, and $5 million in grants—to ease the primary care crisis triggered by Anchor Medical Associates’ summer closure that left 25,000 patients without care. Attorney General Peter Neronha criticized the proposals as a slapdash response and said further studies on state health care will soon be released.  The Newport Daily News

  • Thirteen homes closed in Newport County between April 21 and 25 in Jamestown, Middletown, Newport, Portsmouth, and Tiverton, showing a strong spring market.
