  • Newport Hospital’s Frederick Henry Prince Memorial Fund awarded $188,500 to 31 youth programs while travel scholarship applications for Imperia, Italy, and bench sponsorships for Rogers High School have opened—Aquidneck Community Table will begin its Saturday market today at the Newport County YMCA. The Arts & Cultural Alliance named Revka Hovermale the 2025 Artist Award winner, the Rotary Club’s charity polo match is set for May 31, Newport Rifle Club will run a pistol class on May 10, MIKEL, Inc. secured a Navy contract, and the Colony House now offers a self-guided QR tour daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  The Newport Daily News

  • Aquidneck Island’s hospitality industry is preparing for a busy summer with events like the Newport Oyster Festival and Newport Folk Festival—while facing challenges from unpredictable weather, high living costs, and staffing shortages connected to immigration policy changes and new tariffs.  The Newport Daily News

  • Sen. Dawn Euer introduced a bill that would make nursing homes and their business partners share detailed money reports so that taxpayer dollars help care for patients and support staff — the Nursing Home Financial Transparency Act will require owners to provide balance sheets, cash flows and transaction details to the public. A study found that in 2019, 68 percent of nursing home profits were funneled to related parties through high-price deals, raising concerns over proper use of public funds.  What's Up Newp
  • The 40th Annual Aquidneck Island Police Parade will be held tomorrow to honor three fallen New England Police Officers from 2024—Robert E. Kenahan, the oldest living retired Rhode Island State Trooper, serves as Grand Marshal. The parade starts at 11:50 a.m. at the Hampton Inn and Suites on West Main Road and parking will be closed on Broadway, Washington Square, Duke Street, and Charles Street from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  What's Up Newp
  • The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority has published its lane closure schedule for May 4—10, with Newport Claiborne Pell Bridge closing lanes on May 5, 8, and 9 at 7 am to 3 pm and on May 5 and 9 at 9 am to 3 pm, while the Route 138 Connector will close both directions on May 4 from 7 am to 3 pm. No lanes will be closed on the Jamestown Verrazzano, Mount Hope, or Sakonnet River Bridges.  What's Up Newp
