GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Newport's paid parking and residential sticker programs returned on May 1 (on-street parking costs $2 per hour in most areas and $1.50 on Washington Street while residential permits allow two free hours), and residents get three free hours at the Mary Street Parking Lot. Motorists can pay easily with the Passport mobile app and downtown employees can opt for discounted parking.  The Newport Daily News
  • Rhode Island got the 401 area code in January 1947 and is one of only 11 states with a single area code — the North American Numbering Plan Administrator projects that it will last until 2051.  The Newport Daily News
