COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Newport residents can plan a busy weekend for Mother's Day with several events scheduled—Tiverton Middle School will host the Mother’s Day Specialty Market Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Fred Zilian will deliver a free lecture on local Revolutionary War history at Middletown Public Library Saturday at 2 p.m., the Tree Corps Volunteer Program will meet at Morton Park Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon, and a guided bird walk will begin at Norman Bird Sanctuary Sunday at 8 a.m.  The Newport Daily News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Discover Newport unveiled the 2025 cruise season schedule on May 2, showing that the season started April 25 with the Viking Neptune and includes stops by the Queen Mary 2 on July 5 and Oct. 4, with the Allura arriving on Nov. 7. The schedule shows that larger ships will anchor near Perrotti Park and smaller vessels will dock at South Alofsin Pier in Fort Adams State Park — details that will help local businesses prepare for busy days.  What's Up Newp

  • Bravo announced on May 7 that Real Housewives of Rhode Island will soon premiere—featuring a group of locals with deep community roots along the Ocean State’s shores.   • Sen. Dawn Euer introduced the Children’s Cardiac Safety Act to add screening questions about family heart history and cardiac symptoms in annual physicals and sports preparticipation exams for children 19 and under. The bill, inspired by Newport resident Matt Grant’s story, will require these tests before the start of athletic seasons and include training for health care providers—potentially helping catch heart conditions early.  What's Up Newp

HEALTH NEWS

  • Rhode Island KIDS COUNT released its 31st annual report on May 5 that warns many children may soon lose key benefits such as SNAP, Medicaid, and school meals if federal cuts continue. The report also shows that child poverty, homelessness, and lack of health insurance increased in recent years—raising concerns about the future well-being of state children.  The Newport Daily News

  • Infosys and the International Tennis Hall of Fame extended their partnership for three years until 2028, supporting the Hall’s mission to preserve tennis history and plan an induction celebration for the Class of 2025 featuring Maria Sharapova, Bob and Mike Bryan—this builds on earlier digital innovations like a fan engagement game and a Metaverse Museum that attracted over 10,000 visitors after being announced on May 7.
