CULTURE NEWS

  • On May 31, a documentary titled Around Alone will show at The JPT about Dodge Morgan's solo 1985 voyage on American Promise— a 60-foot sloop built by Ted Hood. The event starts at 4:30 p.m. with a social hour hosted by the Rozalia Project for a Clean Ocean and includes boat tours on May 31 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and June 1 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  What's Up Newp
  • The Jane Pickens Theater & Event Center and What’sUpNewp are planning a three-day Jaws celebration this Memorial Day weekend from May 23 to 26—film screenings, live music, beer and wine tastings, and a shark touch-tank by Save The Bay will bring the community together. Narragansett Beer will support the event with promo items and a raffle, while shows on Friday, Sunday, and Monday offer more local fun.  What's Up Newp
  • Operation Stand Down Rhode Island announced that the Boots on the Ground for Heroes Memorial will return to Fort Adams State Park for Memorial Day weekend, opening at 9 a.m. Friday and featuring over 7,000 boots (each honoring fallen U.S. service members killed after 9/11) along with a special ceremony for Gold Star families and the Invisible Scars of War Monument.  WJAR NBC 10
  • newportFILM will screen the documentary 'SALLY' about astronaut Sally Ride at the Casino Theatre on May 22—teamed with Newport Out and NASA Rhode Island Space Grant Consortium, the film offers a look at her achievements and personal story.   • Today, Salve Regina University conferred 508 bachelor’s degrees on the Class of 2025 on its oceanside campus while President Kelli J. Armstrong and Cody Keenan inspired graduates to serve others—on May 15, a separate ceremony honored 206 master’s, 18 doctoral, and 11 nursing practice degrees. This 75th commencement highlighted the university’s mission to care for the community.  What's Up Newp

  • RIPEC released a policy brief today that found the Housing Resources Commission has a broad role in housing policy and suffers from overlapping duties with the Department of Housing—issues include declining membership, low meeting attendance and conflicts of interest. Governor McKee has submitted a budget amendment that will turn the commission into an advisory body.  What's Up Newp
  • On May 19th, the Coast Guard proposed to remove 38 buoys from local waters to update navigational aids—boaters and local officials worry that removing these markers may lead to safety risks. Sen. Reed and other maritime leaders urged boaters to submit public comments by mid-June to help guide the decision.  What's Up Newp
