  • Newport will host a series of community workshops in June that start with a kickoff presentation at City Hall on June 4 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and continue with a beach walkshop on June 16 at Easton’s Beach, a visioning session at Innovate Newport later that day, design open houses on June 17 at Newport Elks Lodge and June 18 at DiStefano Hall at Salve Regina University, and a final virtual presentation on June 30 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.—all set to share project details with locals.  Newport This Week

CRIME NEWS

  • Newport, Jamestown and North Kingstown police will add extra patrols and deploy a Breath Alcohol Testing Mobile to catch impaired drivers this weekend—an effort announced by Jamestown Police Chief James Campbell following Officer Ryan Bourque’s death—while Providence police and the state’s highway safety office provide additional support.  What's Up Newp

CULTURE NEWS

  • A new exhibit at Rosecliff honors Richard Morris Hunt, the architect behind The Breakers and Marble House, by displaying artifacts loaned from the Library of Congress. The Preservation Society of Newport County will open the exhibit on May 30 and display it until Nov. 2 with a new lighting system protecting archival items.  The Newport Daily News
  • The first Puddingstone Music Festival will run from June 24 to 28 at Newport’s historic venues and will feature three main concerts—'Contrasts' at Redwood Library, 'Quest' at Rough Point, and 'Resonance' at Colony House—as well as free open rehearsals on June 25 and a live podcast recording on June 26. Tickets cost $55 each with an optional $30 reception after the final concert at Provence Sur Mer.  What's Up Newp
  • Operation Stand Down RI will re-create the full Boots on the Ground Memorial display at Fort Adams State Park this Memorial Day weekend; it will be open today from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., on May 24 and 25 with the same hours, and on Memorial Day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.—the display honors over 7,000 boots that remember Post-9/11 service members killed in the Global War on Terror.  Newport This Week

  • Newport’s Zoning Board of Review overturned the Historic District Commission’s denial of the Bellevue Avenue hotel project on May 19, saying the evidence shows the site meets local compatibility standards—Procaccianti Companies had made design changes in earlier meetings to address concerns.  Newport This Week
  • Discover Newport and RIPTA announced the free hop-on hop-off trolley service, Route 67, is available today until October 31 and will stop at key locations including Bellevue Avenue, Memorial Boulevard, and Salve Regina University; the program also offers discounted parking at the Newport Transportation Center. In addition, RIPTA and the Episcopal Diocese are set to bring back free service on Route 68 from CCRI Newport to local centers.  Newport This Week
  • The Newport City Council will meet on May 28 at 6:30 p.m. in City Council Chambers to consider a contract awarding Rhody Surf, Inc.—which will handle umbrella and chair concessions at Easton’s Beach from Memorial Day through Labor Day—as well as a subrecipient agreement for the Newport Cliff Walk restoration, utility bids, infrastructure contracts, and ordinance amendments on smoking and other issues.  What's Up Newp
