- ➤ Newport County is busy with upcoming events—United Way hosts a Day of Action on June 7th to sort books and the MLK Community Center holds a free 3x3 basketball tournament and BBQ on June 19th for local youth. Other news includes Newport Lamp & Shade Company President Patrick Dolat’s graduation from the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program, the inaugural Puddingstone Music Festival from June 24th to 28th, the Jamestown Arts Center’s bird exhibit from June 28th to Aug. 23rd, and the Portsmouth Water and Fire District election on June 11th. - ➤ The League of American Wheelmen was started on May 30, 1880 in Newport to help cyclists who struggled with bad roads and pushback from horse riders and wagon drivers — its early work led to better roads across the country. - ➤ Bally's filed a bill with lawmakers on May 23 to change its marketing agreement with the state if a smoking ban is enacted at its casinos in Lincoln and Tiverton.
