  • Local events this week include Tiverton Historical Society’s walking tours of 18 historic sites, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Liaquat Ahamed speaking at Rosecliff on June 15 about his book, a dinner at Innovate Newport (513 Broadway) on June 2, and RENEWport inviting youth to share reflections for the USA 250 archive.  The Newport Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • More than 100 UTIC employees completed a sonar training course offered through a partnership with URI and RTX during spring 2026, with both in-person and online options marking the third session that has served over 500 employees and strengthened the undersea defense tech workforce.  What's Up Newp
  • Newport's Thompson Middle School students won the top middle school project award at Rhode Island Civics Day on May 22 at the State House. Their project (Revitalizing Space for Family Friendly Activity Center) earned praise from local officials and Generation Citizen New England for its focus on civic engagement.  What's Up Newp

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Yesterday, the Rhode Island House passed a bill allowing water cremation and human composting as eco-friendly alternatives that reduce greenhouse gas emissions; the measure now heads to the Senate for further review.  WJAR NBC 10
  • Social Security benefits for June will follow the normal schedule as SSI checks come on Monday, June 1 while regular checks go out on June 10, June 17, and June 24. A 2.8% COLA means most recipients will get on average at least $56 more.  The Newport Daily News
  • Gov. McKee issued a statewide drought advisory Thursday after the Drought Steering Committee found that precipitation, groundwater & stream flows met advisory criteria across most of Rhode Island, urging residents and businesses to conserve water until three consecutive months of normal conditions are observed.  What's Up Newp

  • Health professionals warned Rhode Islanders on Friday, May 29, about the fast-moving Lone star tick seen in brush areas this summer—NBC 10 reported and offered simple steps for families to stay safe.  WJAR NBC 10
  • The Rhode Island Department of Health is recommending that the swimming area at Easton's Beach be closed because of high bacteria; it will monitor water quality at beaches through Labor Day for any changes.  What's Up Newp
