- ➤ Boys and Girls Club of Newport County’s first Wheels Up! skateboarders finished eight weeks of skate lessons with coach Donnie Barley at Newport Skatepark on Thursday and received their certificates. They learned they could take their skateboards home with help from local supporters like Omen Newport surf and skate shop, Mission Newport, and Rejects Beer Co.—and a $25,000 donation from the Maya L. - ➤ The U.S. Department of Labor announced it will start a phased pause in operations at contractor-operated Job Corps centers, including the Exeter center, after an internal review found the program was not meeting its goals. By June 30, the department will work with local workforce partners to connect students with new education and job opportunities & Rep. - ➤ The Rhode Island Senate passed the Purple Alert Bill overnight (inspired by a March disappearance of a woman with special needs in Cranston) to establish a system that helps quickly find missing adults with serious disabilities. The bill now moves to the House before Governor Dan McKee signs it into law (modeled after silver and amber alerts). WJAR NBC 10
- ➤ A Rhode Island House commission led by Rep. Lauren H. Carson has studied short-term rental concerns such as tax remittance, safety codes and coordination issues between state and municipal systems amid pending lawsuits in Newport, Narragansett and Exeter. The commission plans to propose new legislation by fall once the court cases resolve to protect renters, property owners and the housing supply. The Newport Daily News
