  • Yesterday, Sunday, June 1, hundreds of runners took part in the BankNewport 10 Miler along Ocean Drive and Bellevue Avenue, which led to road closures — later, author Lian Dolan spoke about her new wedding novel at Charter Books and musician Tom Rush played live at The JPT Film & Event Center.  What's Up Newp
  • On Saturday, June 7, Ocean Drive will be closed to cars so people can bike, walk, or roll in a three-hour celebration along Ocean Avenue and Hazard Road—this event honors Elliot Kaminitz, a local bicycle safety advocate. CULTURE NEWS

  • The German U-boat U-853 sank the coal ship Black Point off Point Judith in May and was sunk by U.S. warships, with all 55 crew perishing in what was the last merchant ship loss during World War II in local waters—historian Tim Gray said some U-boats may have entered Narragansett Bay before the war began. The story highlights a part of our local history that continues to spark interest.  The Newport Daily News

  • The House passed a bill on May 29 that would let people choose human composting and water cremation for handling bodies after death. The bill must now pass in the Senate before it becomes law — experts say it could change end-of-life options in our state.  The Newport Daily News
  • Data from the DMV shows the Atlantic Shark Institute charity plate leads with 11,179 registrations and features a Mako shark design that supports local shark research—making it the state’s newest and most popular specialty plate. Other top options include the Plum Beach Lighthouse and Ribbon of Hope Gloria Gemma plates, which customers can order through DMV pre-orders.  The Newport Daily News
