COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Norman Bird Sanctuary will host Beach Bash on Wednesday, July 29 at Third Beach from 5 to 7 p.m. featuring live music by John Monllos, beach games, s’mores, and local food, with tickets supporting conservation work & if inclement weather hits, the event moves to Friday, July 31.  What's Up Newp

CULTURE NEWS

  • To mark America’s 250th anniversary, the Preservation Society is presenting a summer-and-fall program of a new exhibition, plays, children’s activities and lectures. The exhibition (curated by Nicole Williams) runs June 26 through Nov. 1 at Rosecliff while plays and lectures are scheduled at Hunter House and Rosecliff.  What's Up Newp
  • Filming for Rubber Hut, a movie about a 1992 drive-thru condom store, began on Monday, June 1 in a Warwick parking lot with crews building a replica booth and 1990s set pieces, starring Grace Van Patten and directed by Hanna Gray Organschi.  The Newport Daily News
  • The Jane Pickens Theater & Event Center is screening three restored films this June with wine and beer tastings at its Washington Square venue. The series starts today with Chinatown at 7:30 p.m., followed by Cobra on June 4 at 8:30 p.m. and Contact on June 11 at 7:30 p.m.  What's Up Newp

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Newport's Aquidneck Island Adult Learning Center launches its CNA Training Program on June 23, offering 80 hours of classroom and lab instruction + 40 hours of clinical experience for Rhode Island CNA certification. Classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.; register early as space is limited.  Newport This Week

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Dan McKee signed a law letting local licensing boards approve extended bar hours until 4 a.m. and alcohol service until 3 a.m. during the 2026 World Cup (June 11 to July 3). Some bars, like Varsity Luxury Sports Bar, plan to extend hours while others may skip the option.  WJAR NBC 10
  • City officials approved removal of five trees on Jones Avenue for Procaccianti Companies to build the Bellevue Hotel near Bellevue Gardens shopping plaza; fences were up as of June 1 and officials say trees will be replaced during a two-year construction project (landscaping improvements will take six to 10 years).  Newport This Week

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Rhode Island Department of Health recommended that the swimming area at Easton’s Beach reopen after bacteria counts returned to safe levels on Monday. The agency will monitor water quality through Labor Day and warns that conditions may change with new data.  What's Up Newp

  • Atlantic Capital Partners sold Midland Commons, the former site of the Rhode Island Mall, for $20.5 million to Montreal-based Brasswater on Monday, June 1 in Warwick — the property houses tenants such as Dick’s Sporting Goods, Burlington and Planet Fitness.  WJAR NBC 10
