  • Yesterday, Newport hoisted its Pride flag at Equality Park (5 pm) to kick off Pride Month as community leaders, activists, and allies marched to City Hall for a mayoral proclamation. The free ceremony featured speeches, poetry, and a performance by Newport’s Queer Chorus.  What's Up Newp
  • Newport County held free self-guided tours and public meetings Monday and will continue offering a busy schedule of local events, live music, and festivals through Sunday — residents can attend winery tours, craft events, outdoor gatherings and more at various community venues. CRIME NEWS

  • Holly McClaren pleaded no contest to charges related to a nearly two-year-old signature scandal in Sabina Matos' campaign on Monday morning — she was given a three-year suspended sentence and probation after submitting falsified signatures to elections officials in Newport and Jamestown.  WJAR NBC 10

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Road work starts today on Bellevue Avenue as Hartford Paving repairs concrete near William Street under contract with Rhode Island Energy and the work will go until June 6. Traffic going south is affected—Memorial Boulevard’s southbound lane is closed—and drivers heading west or east must use detour routes.  What's Up Newp
  • Legislators set a vote today on a bill that will raise the minimum wage from $15 an hour this year to $16 next year and $17 in 2027. Organized labor supports the measure while business groups warn that higher labor costs may force small firms to trim jobs and hours.  The Newport Daily News
  • Newport City Council rejected the proposed budget for Fiscal 2026 and 2027 and held a May 29 workshop with City Manager Colin Kennedy and staff to review key changes made after council concerns. The revised plan now lowers the tax rate increase and shifts funds to community groups and Transportation Master Plan projects—sidewalk improvements—and will be discussed at a public hearing on June 11.  The Newport Daily News
