- ➤ On June 2, the Senate Committee on Housing and Municipal Government unanimously passed two bills that would require cities to alert the public before reducing parking near designated beach access points and to maintain an official list of these rights+ the House already passed a bill that lets towns turn flood-threatened roads into bike paths or walking trails, and it is now awaiting a Senate vote. - ➤ The Newport Planning Board approved on June 2 a proposal by Harbour Realty and the Abruzese family to redevelop Waites Wharf into a hotel, wedding venue and event space—subject to conditions pending review by city staff and state environmental agencies. Community members voiced their concerns through 93 public letters, with 77 opposing the plan and 13 offering support. Newport This Week

- ➤ The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a public health alert after Organic Rancher ground beef—manufactured on May 22 and May 23 and no longer available in stores—tested positive for E. coli in Whole Foods stores across 27 states. Customers with the one-pound vacuum-packed product labeled 85% lean and set to expire on June 19 and June 20 are urged not to eat it and to discard or return it, while the agency advises cooking ground beef to 160 degrees F to kill harmful bacteria. - ➤ The Rhode Island Department of Health announced a recall of Organic Rancher Organic Ground Beef shipped to Whole Foods that were produced on May 22 and May 23 with use or freeze by dates of June 19 and June 20—no illnesses have been reported.
