GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rhode Island’s House of Representatives approved a bill to ban assault weapons by a vote of 43 to 28 on Tuesday and it now heads to the Senate for review. If enacted, the law will ban the manufacture, purchase, sale, transfer and possession of certain semiautomatic firearms—exceptions exist for law enforcement, military personnel and current owners—beginning July 1, 2026.  What's Up Newp
  • Newport Police Department is seeking public input for its voluntary accreditation process with the Rhode Island Police Accreditation Commission, as assessors will visit on June 20 to review department policies and operations; the public may call in comments at (401) 845-5734 between 11 a.m. and noon.  What's Up Newp
