  • Newport Classical Music Festival will run from July 4-22 with 29 concerts and over 100 artists performing at iconic local venues such as The Breakers, The Elms, Castle Hill Inn, and Norman Bird Sanctuary—opening with a free patriotic concert and fireworks at King Park on July 4. Additional concerts feature renowned acts including Sara Davis Buechner and the Attacca Quartet, promising an innovative summer of music.  The Newport Daily News
  • Newport County started summer on Saturday with the Strawberry Festival at Trinity Church and free museum admissions for locals, while the Newport Flower Show at Rosecliff stays open today and free entry to 19 attractions runs through June 23. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Saturday, RIDEM issued an air quality alert for Washington and Newport Counties due to elevated ground-level ozone. Air quality was worst on the immediate coastline in the late afternoon — the unhealthy ozone levels may cause throat irritation, cough, and shortness of breath, so residents were advised to reduce heavy outdoor activity.  ABC6

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rhode Island lawmakers approved a bill on Friday that bans the sale and manufacturing of many semiautomatic rifles—often called assault weapons—while the law does not prohibit possession. Gov. Dan McKee said he plans to sign the bill, which will also block residents from buying these guns from other states under federal law.  What's Up Newp
