Good morning, Newport. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 26th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Coastal Cruisers launched a new hop-on-hop-off shuttle service in Newport using electric six-seater vehicles that riders flag down and pay with cash, Venmo, or Square — the service covers key spots like downtown, Easton’s Beach, and Castle Hill. The company will collect data and work with the city to possibly extend service to the Park and Ride Lot near the Pell Bridge Ramp exit to ease traffic congestion.  The Newport Daily News
  • The MLK Community Center started the Shower to Empower program to give Newport residents a way to use shower facilities after a pilot session on June 10. The program held a session on June 24 in a shower trailer—featuring three private stalls—and was sponsored by local police and firefighters.  What's Up Newp
  • On June 18, 25 Newport residents gathered at Salve Regina University for a World Café hosted by RENEWport and the Brodsky Chair in U.S. Constitutional Culture and Democracy — the event featured discussions on belonging and community values led by Gene Thompson-Grove. Participants expressed hope and interest in future sessions as another World Café is planned for August.  What's Up Newp

CULTURE NEWS

  • Newport Folk Festival will host an all-star softball game on July 24 at Cardines Field from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. to raise funds for free music lessons; the game will pit Team Morby + Team Goodman against each other with ticket sales starting on July 2 at 1 p.m. at $10 and a special $5 rate for local residents, and no alcohol or food trucks will be present.  What's Up Newp

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. House passed a measure to cut funds for local public media that could cost Public’s Radio & Rhode Island PBS about $1 million a year, putting local news and education programs at risk. The Senate will vote on the package before July 18—if approved, the cuts will reduce support for these community services.  The Public's Radio
  • Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee said on Wednesday that voters should talk to their General Assembly members over a state budget that adds a 2 cent per gallon gas tax, new DMV fees for hybrid and electric cars, a $48 surcharge on health insurance plans, a higher tax on home sales, an extended hotel tax for short term rentals and a tax on expensive second homes—lawmakers will put the plan into law next week despite his refusal to sign it.  The Public's Radio
