CULTURE NEWS

  • Hunt Slonem, a famed painter known for his whimsical bunny art, will present two shows in Newport—Field of Dreams opens tomorrow at Jessica Hagen Fine Art + Design gallery and his Bunnies exhibit is on view at Hammetts Hotel through August 31.  What's Up Newp
  • Last week, a 12-minute boat ride from Fort Adams took visitors to Rose Island where they toured the restored lighthouse, military barracks, and new gift shop run by local volunteers—workers are still cleaning and fixing up old buildings for public tours and overnight stays offered April to October. Visitors also explored tidal pools, beaches, and local wildlife on the small island.  Newport This Week
  • On July 4, the Newport Historical Society will open the Old Colony House from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. for visitors to explore the historic site—at 11 a.m. the Sons of the Revolution will read the Declaration of Independence from its steps followed by a 21-gun salute by the Artillery Company. Additional free events in Washington Square and guided tours across historic Newport will mark the 250th anniversary observance.  Newport This Week

  • Sybil Grayko, a second grade teacher at Pell Elementary, has been named Newport Public Schools’ Teacher of the Year for the 2025-2026 school year after 21 years of service teaching environmental sustainability—Middletown’s sixth-grade math teacher Kristen Pacheco was also honored as Teacher of the Year for her district, with administrators praising her innovative teaching and dedication.  Newport This Week

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Dan McKee signed an assault weapons ban law that stops the sale and manufacturing of these guns. The law will take effect July 1 next year and does not ban keeping the weapons—Rhode Island now joins 11 other states with a similar rule.  ABC6
  • The governor signed a law banning assault weapons today — it stops the making, buying, selling, or transferring of certain military-style guns like semi-automatic rifles and shotguns with fixed magazines or revolving cylinders. The law takes effect July 1, 2026 and sets penalties of up to 10 years in prison or a $10,000 fine for breaking it.  What's Up Newp
