  • At the Edward King House Senior Center’s Mayors Luncheon on June 27, Mayor Charlie Holder and Council Vice-Chair Lynn Ceglie recognized more than 70 volunteers for their service to local older adults—awardees included Volunteer of the Year Robert Nula and Lifetime Achievement Award winner Barbara Peters. The event celebrated dedicated individuals and organizations that support the community.  Newport This Week
  • A charity golf tournament at The Aquidneck Club raised over $150,000 for Newport Mental Health on Tuesday with 124 golfers & 15 major sponsors participating. The event featured tight play in two divisions and an awards ceremony that highlighted the community's support for mental health, as noted by local organizers.  What's Up Newp
  • On June 10 and June 25, the MLK Community Center provided free showers for local residents using trailers placed behind its building to offer hygiene services even in bad weather—sponsors and donations cover each $1,000 event. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rhode Island lawmakers signed a law late last month that will ban the sale, making, and shipping of some assault weapons starting in 2026. The law took over 10 years to pass and gained momentum after Senate leadership changed—supporters say it will curb gun access from other states—while critics note it does not stop owning these weapons.  What's Up Newp
  • On June 25, Newport City council approved a resolution to put Easton’s Beach revenue in excess of yearly operating costs into a new restricted reserve for future facility and grounds maintenance & it comes on the heels of public outreach and recent parking fee changes designed to boost beach funding.  Newport This Week
  • The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority announced it will add extra weekend shuttles linking the Newport Gateway Transportation Center with the new Newport Park & Ride near the Newport Pell Bridge. The shuttles will run every 15 minutes from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays during the summer — a move to ease traffic and help visitors access local transit options.  What's Up Newp
