- ➤ In Rhode Island, homelessness among older adults is rising as a lack of affordable housing and growing health problems push seniors into unstable living conditions—one 79-year-old grandmother has been forced to sleep outside after she could not pay her rent. Kim Simmons from the Rhode Island Coalition to End Homelessness said a January count showed nearly one in five homeless people were aged 55 or older. What's Up Newp
- ➤ Today a fundraiser was held in Middletown for Aaron Delgado, a 17-year-old who lost her leg when the Portuguese-American Citizens club in Portsmouth collapsed on June 7. The event featured a motorcycle run, music and food and was organized by the Hands of Hope Foundation. WJAR NBC 10
- ➤ Evan Miller, a 13-year-old Boy Scout from Troop 3, led 23 volunteers in a three-hour cleanup to remove invasive wisteria choking trees at Norman Bird Sanctuary and earned him the first Narragansett Council—Scouting America’s Conservation Award. - ➤ Nearly 300 swimmers participated in the 49th Save The Bay Swim on Saturday when 281 participants dove from the Naval War College in Newport at 8:05 a.m. into Narragansett Bay for a two-mile swim to Potter Cove in Jamestown — the event raised funds for Save The Bay's habitat restoration and education efforts — and awards were given to longtime participants. - ➤ Rhode Island set up a new land bank during this law making session to help towns find empty property for building cheaper homes and cut land purchase costs. State Rep. June Speakman said the bank will let RIHousing acquire land and work with local owners (it does not pay for home construction). The Public's Radio
- ➤ On July 15th, Newport City Council voted unanimously to keep the Newport Hospital Birthing Center open as families, mothers, and medical professionals showed strong support—Councilor Stephanie Smyth warned that cutting the center could lead to reduced healthcare services and further challenges for our community.
