COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A GoFundMe campaign raised $38,584 from 273 donations to support Middletown resident Jake Cathers in his fight against Stage 4 pancreatic cancer as he received weekly chemotherapy at Newport Hospital. Supporters gathered at Cardines Field during the Newport Gulls game on July 25—where the first 250 fans received free posters from Regine Painting.  What's Up Newp

CULTURE NEWS

  • Newport Art Museum named Harry Philbrick as its new executive director and he will begin his role in mid-September—he is a Rhode Island native with nearly 40 years of museum experience and succeeds interim director Ruth Taylor.  What's Up Newp
  • The Audrain Automobile Museum in Newport opened an exhibit called Rennsport: Porsche’s Transition from Race to Road that shows classic Porsches such as a 1972 Porsche 911 Carrera RST+ a 2024 Porsche 911 GT3-RS, and the exhibit will be available until Nov. 9.  The Newport Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rhode Island law requires drivers to keep right except when passing, when the right lane is closed, on a three-lane road, or on a one-way road—slower vehicles must move right to allow safe overtaking without exceeding posted speed limits. Drivers who break this rule may face a fine of up to $85.  The Newport Daily News
  • RIPTA faces a $17.6 million deficit—cutting 90 jobs and 58 bus routes and possibly raising fares while holding nine public hearings next week. The first meeting is set for Monday, July 28 at the Community College of Rhode Island’s Knight Campus in Warwick.  ABC6

HEALTH NEWS

  • Rhode Island Blood Center declared a blood emergency on Monday as its supply dropped below a two-day level, and starting next Monday donors will get a free beverage voucher at a participating brewery. The Pint for a Pint campaign runs until Aug. 31 — officials hope the incentive will boost donations.  WJAR NBC 10
  • Newport Hospital may close its Noreen Stonor Drexel Birthing Center because of money problems, which could leave mothers and babies with fewer safe care options—public transit users may struggle to reach off-island hospitals. Community members are asked to support more funding to keep the center open and maintain local health services.  The Newport Daily News
