COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Farm Fresh RI is a nonprofit that makes fresh food more available in the community; it served 250,000 people and supported 252 local farmers while nearly $3 million in federal funding was lost, and it is raising funds and will host Local Food Fest at Castle Hill Inn in Newport & seek community help to keep food accessible.  The Newport Daily News
  • This summer, Newport welcomed 15-year-old Make-A-Wish recipient Isobel from Virginia as Mayor Holder met her and her family at Hotel Viking — he presented her with the key to the city and shared his favorite local historic sites. During her six-day visit, she toured The Breakers, enjoyed afternoon tea, and took a sunset cruise.  Newport This Week

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Rhode Island Foundation is inviting local visual artists to apply for three $30,000 fellowships until Aug. 14, and applicants must have lived in the state for at least 12 months—these awards will help them focus on their art.   What's Up Newp

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • RIPTA held a public meeting on July 29 to discuss a $10 million budget gap that will force it to cut bus routes on Aquidneck Island—eliminating Route 68 and reducing Routes 60, 63, and 64—which many Newport residents say could hurt riders who rely on the service. Additional meetings will be held through Aug 6, and the board will vote on the changes on Aug 7 before driver layoffs and reassignments begin on Aug 18 with the new schedule set for Sept. 13.  Newport This Week

HEALTH NEWS

  • Residents rallied on July 29 at City Hall to support keeping the hospital’s birthing center as Brown Health said it remains in the current budget and will review its future over the next year. Brown Health will form a task force with community and hospital leaders — a move to examine labor and delivery services to preserve local care.  Newport This Week

  • Historic John Easton House at 23 Catherine St. in the Kay Catherine neighborhood sold for $4,795,000 this week.
